Mario cart Nintendo wii. can someone tell me how to bloke a shell hitting me?

i know you can some how stop a shell hitting me but cant work out how to do it

if you are lucky you can get round an obstacle or corner so it smashes into it and not you, otherwise just hold a banana or shell behind you with your z button (don't let go). don't use the fake boxes as you still get hit
