When you are training for the navy SEALS does the time you train count as part of the time you enlist for?

Or do you have to be deployed and serve in combat

Unless you have NOT even enlisted yet, that would be YES. You see, if you are training BEFORE you enlist, which is highly recommended, that time obviously does NOT count.

However, if you've already signed on, and the contract is for SEALs (plus whatever rate you signed on for that was eligible for SEALs), then Basic training, your A-school, and BUD/S will all be part of your minimum requirement of 6 years. It takes about 103 weeks for a Gunner's Mate to complete his A-school and BUD/S, to include the jump training, dive training, underwater demolitions and everything else (or that's what it took back when I was in the Nav from 87 to 93). So, upon completion of your training, you will only have about 4 years left on your contract (which is why they require a 6 year enlistment (or a 2-3 year re-enlistment for those already in).

After you complete SEALs training, there will a period of about 6 months after you hit your first unit before you can actually wear the trident (the symbol of the Navy Seals, an eagle holding a vertical trident). This is something of a probationary period, since SEAL grads often get a little crazy after they finish their training, thinking they are on top of the world and wanting to test their little skills. So, even after completion of the training, which is hard enough as it is, you can still screw up and find yourself ousted from your assigned SEAL Team unit.

You're a SEAL or EOD man or whatever else you become, whether you're here in the US or abroad. It does not matter where you are. Your contract days start from the first day you go to that hotel before being flown to your Basic Training, and continues until that time period is over... unless you really mess up and get cut short.
